ART OnO x SONGEUN Special Exhibition: Ji Seon Kim
김지선은 우연히 떠오른 기억의 공간을 출발점으로 삼아 시공간의 기억이 겹치고 혼재되는 과정을 탐구한다. 기억의 형상은 캔버스 위에서 중첩되거나 변주되면서 익숙하면서도 낯선 장면으로 변모한다. 작가는 기억을 선형적 서사가 아닌, 감각에 의해 생성되고 변주되는 비선형적 구조로 이해한다. 빛과 공기, 온도 같은 감각은 과거를 현재로 호출하고, 회화적 평면을 구성한다. 그 결과 기억의 이미지는 점차 흐릿해지거나 왜곡되며 감정이 덧입혀진다. 이러한 메커니즘에 주목하여 한 화면을 분할하거나 복수의 캔버스를 병치하는 다중 프레임 회화를 통해 긴장과 균형을 유지한다. 각각의 분할된 화면은 각기 자율성을 유지하면서도 인접한 화면과 유기적으로 연결된다. 이러한 레이어의 축적은 기억의 밀도와 시차를 드러낸다. 나아가 회화의 평면성은 입체적인 공간으로 확장된다.
김지선은 런던대학교 슬레이드 미술대학에서 학사 및 석사 학위를 취득하였다. 주요 개인전으로는 《잠시 머물다》(보안1942, 서울, 2022), 《밤의 바람과 더 밝은 그림자》(The Wind and Brighter Shadows)(송은 아트큐브, 서울, 2019) 등이 있으며, 《Concave》(우양미술관, 경주, 2021) 등 다수의 국내외 기획전에 참여하였다.
Ji Seon Kim explores the process where memories of time and space overlap and converge, taking as her point of departure a space of memory. On the canvas, these memory-images are layered or varied, transforming into scenes familiar yet unfamiliar. The artist understands memory as a non-linear structure that is generated and modulated through the senses. Sensations such as light, air, and temperature summon the past into the present and constitute the painterly pictorial field. As a result, memory-images gradually become blurred or distorted. Focusing on these mechanisms, she maintains tension and balance by dividing a canvas or juxtaposing multiple canvases. Each segmented screen maintains its autonomy while being organically connected to adjacent screens. The accumulation of layered surfaces reveals the density and parallax of memory. Furthermore, the flatness of the painting expands into three-dimensional space.
Ji Seon Kim received her B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. Selected solo exhibitions include Stay Awhile (Boan1942, Seoul, 2022), and The Wind and Brighter Shadows (SongEun Art Cube, Seoul, 2019). Selected group exhibitions include Concave (Wooyang Museum of Contemporary Art, Gyeongju, 2021), and Forest of Secrets (Paju, 2024).
